Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said taxpayers’ money running into billions of shillings, including funds meant to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, was stolen by senior government officials days before the Kenya Kwanza administration took over power last September.

Speaking on Friday when he met professionals from Tetu Constituency in Nyeri County, the DP said public coffers were raided by the officials as the Supreme Court case against their victory was going on.

“Money was stolen from Covid when people were dying. Two days before the August 9 General Elections, they stole Sh6 billion and pretended to sell some shares from Telkom. When there was a case before the Supreme Court, they stole another Sh10 billion purportedly to pay some contractors,” he said during the dinner at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nairobi.

The Deputy President added that the stolen money was taken to the officials’ homes.

“Money was brought in cartons from Wilson Airport and flown in choppers to people’s homes,” he added in what signals a major investigation to be opened on the former officials who served in Kenyatta’s government.
